Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
